It's been a while.....
I was in New York last week, spent a week taking in all the sites and soaking up the atmosphere. What a fantastic city - it should be on the list of 100 things to do before you die. You only understand the word 'metropolis' after you've been there.
What amazed me was the fact that in so many places - shops, malls, restaurants, hotel lobbies, they played Disco music, also on the street people carried beat boxes with James Brown blaring out - fantastic. Clearly Disco is engrained in this city and part of the vibe. I chatted to lots of people who absolutely love the music. What did I do? I bought records of course!! I went to the House of Oldies and bought a load of vinyl - thanks to Bob who assisted me in the shop. His shop is in Bleeker Street, Greenwich Village...he was the only vinyl shop open so he got my hard earned dollars!!
These are the reocrds I bought: -
All 12" or albums First Time Around - Skyy (only ever seen a 7" of this before)
Disconet Volume 4 Program 10 (never had one of these before)
You're The One - Rory Block
Love Hustle - Family Affair
DJ Rogers - Trust Me
Tango In Space - Space
Slap Slap Lickedy Lap - Instant Funk (never seen it on 12" before)
The Players Association - Love Hangover/I Like It (from 1977 in perfect condition)
You Gotta Dance - Pacific Blue
Love Exciter - El Coco (have it on an album not 12")
Frankie Crocker Heart & Soul Orchestra - LP (hopefully it will be grow on me)
Passion Tracking Vol. 2 - High Energy compilation which I don't have much of.
Plato's Retreat - Joe Thomas
Lime - Your Love (more High energy)
Love Dancin - Marlena Shaw
Stone To The Bone - Timmy Thomas
Morning Music - Siren (Promo)
Don't Take Away Your Love - Hodges James & Smith
Off The Wall - Fat Larry's Band
All good stuff and feature on my latest JSR show - 22-04-2006.
Finally I have a gig on Saturday - 22nd April at the The Loaded Dog 485 High Road Leytonstone, London E11 4PG - it starts at 8.30pm goes on till 1am. Apparently the Jam tribute band were supposed to be playing but they cancelled. Over 200 tickets have been sold - so all these Jam fans are going to turn up and get RetroRuss instead. Can't wait!!!!
I'll probably be recollecting the gig the next time I write hear (if I'm still alive!!) - till then - here are a few more pictures on NYC!!
