I have just posted a comment someone else and logged on as Retroruss. I noticed I haven't posted to my blog since November 2007. Thats over a year! What a year! In some respects it has been good but generally it has been a pretty torrid time. Doing what I do (my day job) I see the effects of the reccession on other people and am suffering also. Not wanting to get political - this is a blog about disco music after all - there is too much spin and the reality is that in London there are decent people losing their jobs, their homes, their families as a direct result of a Government that has failed its electorate whole heartedly. To blame the economic recession on global conditions is an abdication of responsibility. Don't forget, our current Prime Minister was the Chancellor who created the regulatory system for the financial services system that failed. If he had been firmer with the financial services industry, who were driven by greed (and who paid their taxes), then the world would not be in the crisis it finds itself.

Anyway, back to the music. So we did a series of gigs at Corks in the West End, called Strut. It was a success for a long time then the recession hit....numbers depleted. UnknownFM spent a lot of last year off air but its now back and bigger then ever! It is still the number 1 house station and the quality of DJ's and music never fails to impress me. My show is still on at 10pm - midnight BST.

Also I am collaborating with a disco band called Los Charlys Orchestra we have a gig on Thursday 30th April details here .....hopefully this will become a regular monthly affair combining original disco and new acts!

Finally hopefully I won't wait so long to update my blog....see you all soon!!

Sunday, November 25, 2007

It has been a while since I have updated my blog. Lots and lots has happened so I have a spare 5 minutes so it seems only right to do it!!

Firstly myself and Paul Leney are doing a ‘night’’ It kicks off on Friday 1st February and is called Strut! It will be at Corks in Binney Street London W1. We have a number of DJ’s who will playing on the night which starts at 6pm!! It will be £3 entry, £5 after 9pm . It is going to be a fantastic night. More information will be available soon at www.discostrut.com. Corks holds 350 people and is famous for having been a central London venue for many years. We are bringing Disco music back to the West End, on a Friday night for the first time in many years and this will be a monthly event with the next one being 7th March 2008.

Secondly, my shows on UnknownFM and Jazz Syndicate Radio are still going strong. On JSR they have moved from Saturday nights to Thursdays, which actually suits as I record my show on a Saturday!! UnknownFM is fun too!

Also doing a show on Brent Cross FM – BXFM!! 87.7 FM – completely legal!! Every Saturday in December. The shows start at 8.30am and finishes 11.00am Probably snippets of disco and a lot of pop, chat. It’s a proper radio show, with traffic reports every 15 minutes and news on the hour, phone-ins. Looking forward to it!

When was the last time I updated this? Bloody ages!! Oh well...that's how it goes. Since I last updated lots has happened. Firtly JSR continues to take up time. I help run the station's MySpace page and it is great to see so many Jazz Artists and others appreciate what the station does - I personally continue to delve the nether regions of dance music from the 70's but still play the anthems and a range of jazz influenced music from then. It still is a joy to 'play out' on the station!

I have been made a Moderator at DiscoMusic.com on the forum! This site, if you haven't visited it is THE Disco Music resource on the www. It is run out of New York by Bernie Lopez who is recognised as one of the most knowledgeable people in the Disco world and attracts thousamds of visitors. I am honoured to be part of the team and have made some good friends as a result.

I have bought a lot of records - usually for pennies - I won't pay the stupid prices that you see on Ebay and elsewhere. It staggers me what some tunes actually go for - particularly ones that I think are fairly average. Oh well, each to their own! It's always worth waiting for a tune - one in particular - that I have seen advertised for up to £50 cost me £4 (including registered postage)!! I'm sure that there are some tunes that are very rare for one reason or another can command these prices but usually there not...today I saw a record that I ahve seen sold on Ebay for £95 for sale at £10! I'm sure I could find a cheaper one if I looked hard enough!!

Finally it is worth noting that I have finally got my own show on London's leading Underground dance station. I play alongside top DJ's and producers who have their shows! The response from both them and the listeners has been amazing! It is a blast to think your music is being heard by literally thousands and thousands of dance music lovers and that they are hearing the 'mother lode' of dance music. What an immense honour and privilege to be bringing Disco back to the airwaves across London! Check out my MySpace to know what I'm talking about the shows on are on Mondays 10pm to Midnight!

NEW THOUGHTS AND MUSIC

Hello again. Thanks for reading my blog! I thought I'd do another one as one of two things have changed since I last did this! Firstly I am taking a break form SmokeFM. It's not because I am not happy doing a show for them (I am happy playing my music anywhere) it's just time pressure. There are simply not enough hours in the day - I really struggle to do everythng that a person of my 'maturity' should be doing!! To commit to being in a place at 6pm is just too challenging for me at the moment. I am hoping that I can resume my shows here soon.

I have also been spending a bit of money on new (old) vinyl. Most of which you can hear in this week's (24th February show). There are a couple that I have never owned and are popular and a few obscurities that have been passed over by time but are good enough to be aired. Talking of this week's show what you hear is 'version 2'. The first one was lost when I dropped my MiniDisc and the battery fell out - erasing everything. I was three quarters of the way through it so was not best pleased to do it again. Oh well...second time around I did change the order a bit and it seems to hang together a bit better.

Last week I went 'clubbing' to hear my friend PapaG play his set at 4am in the morning at a club in Central London. It was LOUD, but very enjoyable! I wasn't the oldest there either!!

In the coming weeks my shows on JSR will feature some music that are CD based rather than vinyl. I have quite few CDs of Soul Disco & Funk that need to be aired so will be doing that in a few weeks

It’s been ages since I did my Blog. So firstly Happy New Year! (Yes it’s been that long!) So what’s been happening in the World of RetroRuss?

Well firstly I now manage the MySpace page for Jazz Syndicate Radio – this has grown exponentially over the past 10 weeks or so it’s been up. Lots of artists, fans and other DJ’s have made contact and it’s certainly a good vehicle to stay in touch. If you want to connect with me then do visit my MySpace page www.myspace.om/retroruss
I’ve got lots of MySpace friends too!

What else – I’ve been buying some new (old) tunes…my best acquisition being Free- Deniece Williams, vinyl on the Columbia label, plus other odds and sods that are now in the vaults ready to be played at some stage in the future. I have been on JSR for over a year and for my anniversary show did a House Music show. It was different and interesting to do – certainly something I will repeat again in the future.

I went to see Dreamgirls the movie this week. A film about soul music sounded great and I like Jennifer Hudson, Jammie Foxx, Eddie Murphy & Beyonce. The film was a huge disappointment, with the exception of Jennifer Hudson. Poor script, bad dialogue, terrible music, just a bad film. The potential to do a film about this era was enormous and all I can say was that whoever was in charge, ‘ballsed it up’.

Hopefully going to do a live show on an FM station soon and a gig too….watch this space for future announcements!

THURSDAY

A good week musically. A good week for http://www.jazzsyndicate.co.uk, a good week for our MySpace account. I'm not going into details but watch this space.

I just want to comment on a thread on the Soul Music Radio Forum - a widely respected and well known DJ and Producer was roundly attacked by a fellow member of the forum - now banned by the moderators. Clearly the individual who did the attacking is known within the general DJ/soul music community, although I do not know him personally. His wife has a radio show on a station and is clearly widely respected. Personally speaking, whatever you think of an individual, you should keep your opinions to yourself & certainly not air them on a forum (unless they are a politician). Comparing this man to a Wedding DJ (as what was said) is like calling Michael Jackson a Barmitzvah singer.

Anyway - this week's show features two House tracks - it is a preview of what I will playing on 30th December - my 1 years anniversary on JSR - House music - featuring Disco breaks. So for one night only RetroRuss becomes Modern (or whatever Russ) - looking forward to it!! A BIG thanks to PapaG for loaning me the vinyl. We spent hours sorting through stuff and his show on Wednesday on UnknownFM was outrageously brilliant!

THURSDAY BLOG

First time I've done one on the new PC...the wireless keyboard is different & the big screen means I can sit elsewhere. Anyway, hello again!

Just recorded a show for Saturday - it sounded like a dog's dinner to me but I'm no judge! I'd planned ot two nights ago, dug out the vinyl and just couldn't get it together...when all else fails - go to the party boxes, which is exactly what I did, so no Shaft or Meco instead, Trussell, POstive Force and Disco Extravaganza I did get some interesting funk in there.

I'm getting back into my groove again all over the place so that's a positive step. I am planning a few 'interesting shows, in the coming weeks and months. One I'm particularly excited about is a House music show...so it won't be RetroRuss!! Basically I'll take House music with a well known Disco riff and mix them all together....music to be supplied by my good friend PapaG, London's No1 Deep House DJ & the best mixer I know!

JSR's MySPace site is coming along nicely and a big thanks to Beth for help on this. The response has been great and I really cannot believe who has requested to be 'our friend'...do check this out! JSR did not win Internet Station of the Year. Oh well, never mind there's always next year! It's nearly a year since I started with JSR. 31st December was my first show and I've done about 48. I'm running out of 'new' material - having been through most of my good records - I could always do a 'bad' Disco show, but I'm not sure that anyone would listen!! WHat do you think? Peace & Love. RR

BACK ON BLOGGER

It's been a long time coming but I'm back doing a blog here for the site! Not really helped by Blogger's change and me not remebering my 'exclusive' GMail email address!! I managed to crack the system so got back control of it!! I've got so many email addresses it's becoming a bit of anightmare to manage them all! Some date back to 1994 so whenever I change PC's there are about 10 passwords I have to remember - of course none are written down, so as I can't remember what I was doing yesterday there is not much hope remembering the codes...oh well.

I got a new PC (second hand actually), hardly used to replace the one that was stolen. It's working but now I have about fours hours worth of loading the back-up on to the PC, setting up the printer, MS Office, email accounts and shed loads of other stuff!!

JSR has set up a MySpace page, which I have the honour of managing! It can be found here . I also do the Blog . We started it on Tuesday & already have 35 friends....not bad going in the world of cyberspace.

Two weeks ago I met up with Marky Mark, at Soul In the City. I had a great night and also met Ginger Tony, Abbo, Soulmaster T and a fair few other folk involved with JSR. Great music, very convivial company and will do my damnest to get to the next one!

This week's show is real eclectic mix of Disco, Jazz Funk and a bit of Soul, tried a different style! Just heard it back and to say it didn't sound too shabby - you'll just have to lock on and hear for yourself!!

Friday, November 10, 2006

It's Friday night, I'm listening to the Rep on JSR and I'm getting into relax mode for the weekend! if you like Jazz there's no where better on a Friday night....

Quite an eventful week - got the new motorbike. It's exactly the same as the old one...just needs running in for a few hundred miles, recorded a show which was basically album tracks, that time had forgotten, went to see PapaG of Unknownfm and we did some stuff on the PC

This week's show sounds pretty good even if I say so myself!! Worth locking on to at 8pm on Saturday night!!

SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

There is something decadent about listening to one's shows, and typing a blog about it at the same time....Saturday night - staying in, again - watching X Factor - Leona was amazing!! This week's show featured sings from 1978. A good year if I recall correctly. my interest in Disco music was probably really getting big, as was my desire to go clubbing - I think this year saw me for the first time at Legends & Maunkberry's...listening to Robbie Vincent, Greg Edwards and Pete Young on the radio. Some of the records that I played havebecome timeless classics. 'I Will Survive' - Gloria Gaynor is a masterful piece of work - if you listen to the rhtym guitar in the background, you'll know what I mean. 'In the Bush' - Musique, became a Disco standard & 'Le Freak' - Chic, epitomised music at that time!! If you are reading this then after Saturday night then you can always go to the show at my site.

JSR hasbeen nominated for an award at Soul Tracks. To vote click here. It is very rare for a British station to be nominated and amazing if we won.....so pleeeeeaaaase vote for Jazz Syndicate Radio!!

Thursday, October 19, 2006

Hello again. I recorded this saturday's show last night and burned it at work using a sooper dooper new, fast PC!! I doubt it has made the DJing any better but at least it means that I have another day to record the show! This week was interesting in that I had dug out a load of stuff, only to find that half of it was unplayable - too awful for broadcast. Paul Jabara's 'Disco Wedding' is a case in point! So I had to dive into the party boxes and find stuff from 1979, which wasn't too difficult! Consequently the show is mix of interesting and 'club classic' - hopefully something for everyone!

Next week I am going to 1978! If there are any requests then do get in touch HERE If I've got it I'll play it and dedicate it to you! I was told by Mark that my show last week outperformed a certain rival on the net - more listeners then anywhere else!! Wow...I'm overwhelmed and thanks for stopping by and listening in. No-one leaves comments - although I know this is read, and I'll be happy to dedicate a tune for you!! Any requests need to be in by Wednesday at the very latest!!

I got the cheque for the car so will be looking to buy something shortly! Bike claim is moving on and should get that very soon...then that leaves the household stuff...must get the TV aerial sorted!!!

That's it for now - hope you enjoy the show on Saturday!

GENERAL

Had a reasonably good week - all the insurance claims are now lodged with the various companies so waiting to hear back soon. Went out for dinner on Wednesday and ended up not getting to bed till 1.30am!! Not good when you're Retro, but had a great evening....we ended up singing and playing keyboards & guitar...with Jon and my talented family - Jo & Guy joined us and it was the highlight of the week! Not a bad week at the 'proper' job too!!

SHOW

I haven't recorded the 21st October show yet. I did go in the loft and dig out some interesting tunes so they will feature - it will be back to 1978 or 1979 so we will see how it goes....

That's it for now - short & sweet....still recovering from Wednesday!!

STILL A STAR!

It's now known who are the final few through to the finals of The X Factor. Obviously my friend Jonathan didn't make it. I'm really disappointed for him, and it is a great shame that the nation will not see his considerable talent. maybe they felt that they didn't want 'another' Shayne Ward or Will Young, as I firmly belive that he could give either of those artists a run for their money. I know he's got it in him to regroup, bounce back and make it happen. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's already being courted by record companies and management deals will follow soon!!

THE NEXT SHOW

I have already recorded next week's show - again it's different - music from 1980 & 1981...the last years I was out clubbing, with less money so consequently a bit more commercial then the usual shows. I think to counterbalance, I may well do an 'obscure' dance music show the following week (21st)...I dug out a load of interesting vinyl - looking for my Deniece Williams 12" - Free (which I didn't find!!) - the show will include some really interesting tracks, counter-balanced with some club classics!! I've got a couple of weeks to record it....

BURGLARY SAGA

Finally got all the documents through from the DVLA - so will proceed to get my money through for the car & bike. Should have a new bike by November, just in time for the wind & rain!! Can't wait.

Dont forget my MySpace sign up and be my friend and that way I can tell you about my shows!!!

A Non-Music Rant!!

I am absolutely livid at the moment....as you may be aware I was burgled by some scum in August. As well as nicking loads of stuff in my house, they alos took my motorbike, & car(s). One's been recovered, in a mess but hey they're scum so what do you expect...the bike and my car - gone. Anyway, the f*ckers also took the Registration Documents for both vehicles. I applied to the DVLA for replacements and the one for the bike came quite quickly. Anyway last week sent it off to the insurance co. with all the other documents that I'd also had replaced requesting thet they deal with it urgently. Hadn't heard anything so rang them yeterday, to be told they hadn't received the stuff. As it wasregistered post - I checked...the f*cking Post Office has lost the stuff. I rang the DVLA to get another one, and checked on progress on the Document for the car. I was told that it had been sent the day before...so when I got home I had a letter from them to say that it can't be replaced asthey'd been told it had been scrapped. I rang the insurance company - they hadn't told them that, I rang the police, they hadn't either, I hadn't told them that, so who the f*ck had!! So I rang the number on the letter - engaged...& again engaged ...& again engaged ...& again engaged - in fact it's always engaged. Even on Saturday night. They don't worko over the weekend - I want to know, as do the police, and the insurance company who told them it had been scrapped? It can't be incompetence by a government department...surely not?? ....To be continued!!

Wednesday, September 27, 2006

Hello, again!

I've just recorded this week's show....only music from 1979 (except the very last track for aesthetic reasons)....That particular year was when Disco music peaked. it was an exciting year and not only several classic dance tracks were made but equally there were some less well known pieces made....for example, The River Drive - Jupiter Beyond is an absolutely amazing piece of music. If you don't know it - then do check it out. I tend to 'mix it up', but this week put in a couple of interesting 'floor fillers' - not the usual stuff that you might hear on certain commercial radio stations. My attempts at mixing this week were somewhat rubbish this week!! I usually save that for the beginning of the show but basically ballsed it up...anyway I did one later on that was a bit better!!

If you're reading this then do visit my MySpace site....it's still in development but I have a great tutor in my 13 year old daughter - Beth so it will get better and better - hope to put my shows on their eventually!! If you become 'My Friend' then I will be posting bulletins on when shows are posted on my website, live events, and all other stuff related to my burgeoning DJing career!!

Monday, September 18, 2006

Hello hello, another week goes by...

Recorded anther show & it's back to 'classic' Disco with a few twists per usual!! I am back in the groove woth Jazz Syndicate, but alas not with Smoke. I physically cannot get there with a load of vinyl. I can't carry it on the bike I am using at the moment....hopefully that will resume soon, but realistically we are looking at some time in October when I get a bike with a proper carrier.

Don't forget to visit my MYSPace place - address here. I don't have many friends as I am not popular!! Although I do seem to have listeners or visitors to my site from all over the world...maybe they are looking up retrovirus and get me instead!!

I am not going to make any statement here about my friend Jon, other than to say he is well. Too many journos sniffing around.....

Saturday, September 09, 2006

Just a quickie...do listen to the show tonight - Disco not Disco with some interesting tracks!! It wasa blast to record.

My friend Jon is doing X Factor - got a text from him to say all's good and things are progressing...I'll dig out some photos of us and post them here as he hopefully progresses in the competition. Any newspapers that decide to lift them will be in breach of copyright - you have been warned. No requests either for stories - don't waste your breath - the answer's no. If you want to know who I'm going on about go HERE

Good to hear the dulcet tones of Ben S. as I type this....still dealing with the aftermath of the robbery.

Sunday, August 27, 2006

Hello again - it's been a while!! I've only just got back from my holidays - a lovely two weeks in Skiathos Island, Greece. I have come back very chilled and relaxed as usual! More about that later.

Another reason why I have not posted in a long while is that three weeks ago we had a major burglary at the house. The thieving scum stole two cars, my motorbike, PC, DVD/Video Recorder, mobile phones, bike equipment and other stuff. They did not touch the records - so as well as being thieving scumbags they are thieving scumbags with no taste or intelligence. The police have been great and have caught and charged one scumbag with the the theft and others in connection with it. They have also recovered one of our cars that will need repairing. The scum went through all the papers and took vehicle documentation, some money as well, callously leaving the home insurance document in view. They stole knives in the kitchen, leaving one in the lounge. Myself and one of my sons was asleep in the house at the time and they entered our rooms and took stuff from there. Arrests were made a week later - their own stupidity got them caught - but they have not divulged to the police the whereabouts of my stuff or the cars or indeed given the police any idea where they live. Consequently they are in prison awaiting trial where I hope they are thoroughly miserable, being abused by prison staff and other cons, and are eating horrible food in filthy conditions.

Back to the holiday - I met up again with Rob Wicks, one of the leading Northern Soul DJ's in the UK and we spent many an evening talking about music over a beer and vodka and discussing the respective London scene compared to Northern scene. We last met up two years ago and this time I fully intend to stay in touch. Also Harry who ran the bar loved the Disco music I brought with me - whenever he was working he played the CD and took a copy to burn. He runs clubs in Athens and Disco is clearly big there!!

Finally I intend to record a show for JSR this week - it was one I planned to do three weeks ago so is the 'Disco not Disco' show...disco & dance music recorded by non Disco artists. It will, I assure you remain an ABBA free music zone!

Sunday, August 06, 2006

Hello again! It's been a while and this is my last blog till September. I have just returned from my alast ever night at The Royal Oak pub, which is closing on 12th August. Alas I can't be there so tonight was the last time. It's sad...I've never talkied about it before but a Saturday night at the Oak was brilliant because it was Karaoake noght. The guy that ran the evening - Jon is a huge talent - more on that later. It was so sad to know that the people I saw more or less once or twice a month will no longer gather at this venue. It was a greta night - in fact every night I have has there when Jon is working his magic has been great. It's a sad loss.

I think this week's show went out. Next week's show will be different. A "Disco but not Disco" show. that is Disco recorded by non-Disco artists. It will feature people such as Jim Capaldi, Cher, Dusty Springfield & Marsha Hunt, to name a few. Afther that there will be a 1980's show (well 1980-1984) and then a generic Disco/Soul/Funk Show. I've got a couple of interesting tracks to play for that one.

So back to Jon. Jon is a 26 year old young man with a great voice. He's also a showman, good looking and has a star quality that very few possess. An 'X Factor'...funny I should mention this as Jon has entered the competition and we are hoping that he will progress through it to the finals. We are all routing for him. If you get the chance then do vote for him. He is one of the most genuine individuals I have had the pleasure if ever meeting.

Anyway that's it for the time being. Hope you enjoy the shows on JSR...there may be an update on other developments this week but I don't want to discuss them now....

Monday, July 24, 2006

It's been a while since I last posted (again!). Last week's show was OK. I got some good feedback. It was a bit of a mixture but I particularly liked the Mandrill tracks that I played. This week's (29/07) is a 'funk' show. It's kind of accessible funk and not too deep - I tred yto incorporate a blend of funky music, or more to the point music that I think is funky, whilst staying aaway from the usual suspects! I also included (for variation) a few tracks from the 1980's. I avoided 'Play That Funky Music' and 'Brick House' which I tend to play to death. Playing 'Good Times - Cameo' was a bit of a nostalgic trip. I've rarely played that in 25 odd years so it was good to hear it again. It was the 'B' side to 'Funk Funk' and I just felt, spontaneuosly that Funk Funk wouldn't work into the show.

Nothing much else has happened - although a possibility of a sponsor for the show! I was told my Saturday night slot gets on average 350 listeners!! More for the repeat during the week! I'm proud of that. It's also interesting through my stats to see where my visitors come from...the strangest country, to date is Niger! Althoug The Seychelles, Croatia and Poland have come up on the stats. I can honestly say RetroRuss is a global phenomen!!

Monday, July 10, 2006

Firstly - apologies - I haven't done one of these in ages....been busy!! Actually there hasn't been much to tell recently. I've been recording my shows and that's about it! I haven't done much Smoke...meetings and commitments seem to fall on a Thursday so I always seem to be unable to go to the studio!

I suppose the main news is that the very first venue I played when I returned to DJing is closing down...The Royal Oak - is to close!! It has been sold to developers who are going to turn it into flats....we don't need flats. We want a pub. There are no other pubs for miles around here so it's very annoying that they are closing to close this one!

If anyone can help with trying to save it then please email me at savetheoak@hotmail.co.uk any assistance would be required - a lot of locals are angry about this - it will leave us bereft of a local hostelry!!

I have recorded my latest show for next week - I think I'd call it 'eclectic'...or in onther words real hotch-potch!! Don't forget there's still time to enter the competition - The prize is an original vinyl single.

Friday, June 23, 2006

Last week I did 'Disco At The Dog' - it was unfortunately not very well attended, so only got a couple of pictures. This week I recorded a Jazz Funk show and depending on reaction may well do another one soon...I am watching the World Cup & don't fancy England's chances!! Personally, I think Holland look godd, and potentially will see a Holland Argentina final.
Thanks to Alison & Sanda for coming to the gig!!

Sunday, June 11, 2006

It's boiling here in London town as I write this! Currently 28.2 celsius - a bit of a scorcher. I have read that it will cool down by mid-week ! This week has been fairly quiet - although my musical thoughts are now focussed on next Saturday's gig at The Loaded Dog. I caught Ben's and Aja's show on Saturday on JSR and heard them plug the gig. Ben put a really nice post on SMR forum - it's had 40 views (to date) plus about 150 views elsewhere so hopefully one or two of you will turn up! If you are planning on coming and want to hear a specific track then email me and I'll bring it with.

I am planning to do a Jazz Funk show next week - so during my forays into the boxes this week sorting out stuff for The Loaded Dog - I will dig stuff out!!

Finally I'd like to thank all the Dj's who have plugged my gig on their shows....I am eternally grateful and will be delighted to return the compliment anytime!

Monday, June 05, 2006

Firstly I would like to thank all the DJ's on the Soul Music radio forum, who are plugging my night at The Loaded Dog on their shows. It is really appreciated and I can't thank you all enough for the support!

The posters have been drawn - thanks Josh - and it's on about a dozen or so websites - if you want to come or know more - go to here...I am beginning to think about what music to take....it's really difficult. If anyone's coming and wants a particular request then let me know via email - obviously before the 17th June!!

This week's show is as a result of sorting out a load of records - that were lurking and hadn't been played for ages. I finally found Got to Have Loving by Don Ray.

As I am doing the gig next week I'm not sure whether to do a 'Party Box' show or something entirely different!

Wednesday, May 31, 2006

It's been an interesting week. The JSR website has been updated - I had the honour of being the DJ to post his playlist. The weekend was really busy so only got to record my JSR show last night. It was an interesting one - as usual I ran out of vinyl and dived into one of the 'party boxes...so it has a sort of interesting vibe - very Jazz Funk to start with then very 'club classic at the end!

Got into an interesting debate with Quinny (Simon) this week regarding radio on http://www.discomusic.com - he is someone who has strong opinions and I have great respect for. To view the thread (which was somewhat hijacked) click here.

This week will begin in earnest to promote the night at the Loaded Dog - details here - hopefully it's going to be hard to miss.

Finally I had another appearance on BBC News24 - talking about the bain of my life - Family Tax Credits. I get very annoyed that I am being made out to be the 'criminal' where in fact the problem is with the government's system. It was announced today that they have overpaid a further £1.8bn. I was one of them!! I empathise with those who are effected by this, and the lack of compassion this government shows. Clearly this government can't run anything (just look at the Home Office) - as far as I am concerned the extra billions this government has raised and spent has been wasted. Possibly the one exception is the Health Service, which I was exposed to this week. Having said that I get the impression that the majority of staff are from an agency rather than directly employed. I know my battle with them has just begun over my situation - I will not back down and have the support of not just the BBC but other people with political influence. I'm not paying the amount they are asking for BACK.

Nothing much to report since my last post. I didn't do a show at Smoke this week I was under the weather. I have recorded this week's show (27-05-2006) for http://www.jazzsyndicate.co.uk - this week's inspiration came from http://www.discomusic.com and a thread counting down everyone's top 5. The number one track I have but couldn't bloody find it - MFSB. After humping around the about the fifth box I couldn't be bothered to look anymore, I know I've got it! So played a few others in the Party Boxes. I played Mr. Blindman - Donna McGhee from the album of the same name. It's probably the most sought after Disco LP and the re-release goes for £50 on websites - I've seen the original for sale (and subsequently sold ) for £200! I played Stomp - Brothers Johnson, an evocative song for me.

I was looking at the hits on my tracker for this week and notice that downloads and visits increase on a Saturday andfrom literally all over the World. It's only on the Internet where I can claim to have listeners in the Seychelles! I'd genuinely love to hear from you - tell me what you think - make a request - so send me an email - my address is retrorussell@hotmail.co.uk - you can write it in your own language - I'll translate it.....

Anyway I appreciate your support - thanks everyone!

There has been a slight change in the design of the site, to take into account recent changes regarding copyright. When I play gigs I am covered by the venue's PRS licence...when my show goes out on 'air' on JSR it is covered by the station's licence, however on the website there is no such cover. As the number of visitors to my site increases (over 200 per day on average) there is a danger that 'someone' could cry foul and 'do me' for illegality!! To get around it I can stream something that has already been broadcast. Therefore my 'Track of The week' is always a track that has featured in my show and the actual show is now streamed by pressing the button. We are currently working on a system that will keep the stream going whilst someone peruses the site, using the same browser. I can't sell the music but if anyone's interested I can burn the shows onto CD and send it you if you are prepared to cover the cost of posting and packaging. If anyone's interested then post a comment at the end of this Blog and I'll take a view.

On another subject I am hoping to hear imminently whether "Saturday Night at The Dog with RR" is on!! I spoke to Bernie, the owner, who, very understandly would prefer to build his reputation as a 'Tributes & Covers" band venue - particularly Friday & Saturday nights. I was offered other nights but both I fear clash with other people's own nights playing similar music and I don't want to take a slice of what is already a small piece of the cake!

I do need to do a public gig soon...it's been a while now and The Dog would be great - the sound system is just fantastic! At the moment For Funks Sake is dormant. So no more Lets Get It Together for the time being. So if anyone needs a DJ specialising in 70's Disco, Soul & Funk get in touch!!

Recorded a show today.....sounds reasonable - some good, interesting tracks on it.....plus some more popular tracks from BITD....apologies that there is a delay on this week's show...problem uploading to the site.

Had an audience watching me record it which is always fun - plus I lowered all the levels - so that means when you play it - play it loud!! I actaully got the timimg absolutely perfect. The last track ends at 2.00.19....it doesn't get better than that!! No news on the gig front. I'm not going to harrass the people in East London - although it will probably appear on their website before they tell me!! Two likely dates are the 3rd and the 10th of June but until it's confirmed I can't say anything....I'd like a month to promote it but....who knows!!
